MANILA, Philippines - Hundreds of lifeguards manning beaches and swimming pools nationwide will undergo water search and rescue (WASAR) training before the Holy Week, the Philippine Coast Guard said yesterday.
PCG spokesman Armand Balilo said the training is needed to ensure safety of the public who are expected to swarm resorts and beaches this summer.
Balilo said aside from WASAR, lifeguards could be taught lessons on basic lifesaving techniques and leadership.
He said the training has already started in some PCG districts such as in Bantayan in Cebu. He said at least 100 lifeguards in the area joined the training which could last from three to five days.
