CBCP to govt : Make peace deals with MNLF, groups

MANILA, Philippines - An official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines on Thursday called on the government to conduct inter-religious dialogues with all stakeholders in Mindanao.

Fr. Carlos Reyes, CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Inter-religious Dialogue executive secretary, said the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the government is merely the start toward achieving lasting peace in the region.

The prelate added that the government should also forge peace accords with other groups in Mindanao, like the Moro National Liberation Front.  

"Natutuwa kami at may bagong simula patungo sa kapayapaan subalit kailangan pa rin nating manalangin dahil ito ay unang hakbang lamang sa landas ng kapayapaan. Dapat  magbantay pa rin dahil may mga isyu sa Mindanao na ang tingin natin kailangan, andun ang ibang grupo na maliban sa MNLF ay maisama din, gaya ng mga katutubo. May mga lugar din na walang kapayapaan dahil sa MNLF at iba pang rebel groups," Fr. Reyes told Radyo Veritas.

Meanwhile, the priest said that the recent appointment of Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Cardinal Quevedo is a welcome development as it boosts the promotion of peace and progress in the region.

"Ito ay magbibigay ng karagdagang tulak para sa kapayapaan, ang kanyang pagkaka-elevate. Malaki din ang maitutulong ng mga obispo, Imam at Olama, dahil ang kontribusyon ng relihiyon ay napakalaking bagay para sa pagsusulong ng kapayapaan, kung saan sa katauhan ni Cardinal Quevedo ay ipinapakikta rin ang suporta ng Santo Papa," Fr. Reyes said.
