Fire kills baby girl in Zamboanga

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Fire gutted a house in Barangay Guiwan on Tuesday night, killing a three-month-old baby girl.

The city fire bureau said that the fire that gutted the house of the Marquez family broke out at around 7 p.m.

Police identified the baby girl as Sheena Kasim.

The power supply in the whole village was out when the fire broke out.

Investigators said that an unattended lighted candle started the fire, which also damaged the office of an adjacent sawmill. The candle was placed on an altar inside a room, where the baby was sleeping.

The room's curtain caught the candle's flame, which quickly engulfed the whole room.

Responding firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevented it from gutting the adjacent sawmill.
