Fire razes displaced Zambo families' bunker rooms

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY - At least 19 families of evacuees of last year's Zamboanga siege, were again displaced after fire razed the private bunker shelters they were renting on Wednesday morning.

City fire marshal Superintendent Dominador Zabala said the fire broke out in the 18-room private bunker shelter, which was made of light materials, in Barangay Sta. Catalina at about 9:30 a.m.

He said the shelters were being rented by 19 families, who used to stay at the KGK apartment building that were occupied by members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) at the height of the siege in September last year.

The evacuees were renting the private rooms while waiting for the government to finish the rehabilitation of their village. The rehabilitation may take more than a year to finish.

Zabala said no one was reported hurt or injured among the displaced victims even as the fire quickly gutted the bunker.

One of the occupants identified as Sherhaina Abduhajad claimed the fire started in Room 18.

Arson investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
