Sarangani mayor dies of cardiac arrest after ambush

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – The mayor of Maitum town in Sarangani yesterday died of cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds sustained in an ambush late Friday.

Mayor George Perret and his wife, Elsie, were on their way home from the town when gunmen opened fire at their Toyota Fortuner wounding them and their aide.

The victims were rushed to a hospital in Gen. Santos City where Perret’s wife was undergoing medication as of press time.

Authorities have yet to identify the attackers and the motive for the attack, said Senior Inspector  Arnold Montesa, chief of the Maitum municipal police.

Montesa expressed belief the ambush was politically-motivated. – John Unson, John Paul Jubelag
