MANILA, Philippines - A 24-hour police checkpoint operation is being implemented in Iloilo City as authorities imposed a gun ban yesterday in connection with the celebration of the Dinagyang Festival.
The operation is being implemented in the city’s entry and exit points, according to Chief Inspector Gilberto Gorero, spokesperson for the city police.
Gorero expressed hope gun holders would abide by the law.
A week ago, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima approved the suspension of permits to carry firearms outside of residence in Iloilo City in line with the festivity that started yesterday and will end on Jan. 27.
Only members of the PNP, Armed Forces and other law enforcement agencies who are performing official duties and in agency-prescribed uniforms are allowed to carry firearms.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog sought the gun ban to ensure that the celebration would be free from gun-related violence.
“We want to ensure safety of the visitors, revelers and tourists who will come and enjoy the festivity,†Gorero said.
At least 2,000 uniformed personnel will be deployed around the city before, during, and after the Dinagyang festivity.
