MANILA, Philippines - The Phinma Foundation Inc. has initiated the reconstruction and rebuilding of the Palo Metropolitan Cathedral in Palo, Leyte.
The cathedral, built in 1596 by the Jesuits, sustained massive damage at the height of Typhoon Yolanda.
The reconstruction will focus on the redesign and restoration of the cathedral’s main dome structure, while the main roof over the rest of the cathedral will be retrofitted and reinforced to maintain its structural integrity, then completely replaced.
In addition, the foundation will also replace the roofing of the convent where the parish priest and his staff reside.
The project will be carried out by Phinma’s steel roofing company, Union Galvasteel Corp.
Bishop John Du, the archbishop of the Diocese of Palo, has lauded the project as a manifestation of the spirit of goodwill and unity between the church and private business.
He encouraged all sectors to join the archdiocese and Phinma in the project as much work remains to be done in the rest of the cathedral after this initial reconstruction.
