Cops clueless on identity of man killed in grenade blast

John Unson - The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines - Investigators are still clueless on the exact identity of a mentally deranged man killed the other day in an accidental explosion of a fragmentation grenade he found in a roadside garbage bin along a busy street in Cotabato City.

Senior Supt. Rolen Balquin, city police director, said the victim, only known as Edong, died from shrapnel wounds in different parts of his body.

The victim reportedly found the fragmentation grenade in a garbage collection bin in front of the residence of Adnan Biruar, a member of the municipal council in Parang town in the first district of Maguindanao.

Balquin said investigators assumed that Edong could have played with the explosive and accidentally removed its safety pin.

“The victim died on the spot,” Balquin said.

He said probers have yet to determine who could have left the grenade at the garbage bin.

Biruar, president of the Association of Barangay Chairmen in Parang, a politically troubled town, said he is unsure too if the grenade was intended for him, or any member of his family.
