Illegal drug trade eyed in massacre of driver, 2 kids

Dino Balabo - The Philippine Star

HAGONOY, Bulacan , Philippines– Police are now looking into the illegal drug trade behind the massacre of a tricycle driver and his two children here last Thursday night.

Investigators said tricycle driver Andres Vengco and his wife Estrelita, who was not at home during the killing, had been on their anti-drug watch list for over a year.

“It is one of the angles we are carefully looking into,” said PO2 Michael Gutierrez.

Based on their investigation, he said they found out that Estrelita has a brother currently serving a sentence for illegal drugs at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

Estrelita’s brother, according to Gutierrez, introduced her last year to a man supposedly involved in the illegal drug trade.

Two men barged into the Vengcos’ house in Purok 9, Barangay Sta. Monica here last Thursday night and shot dead the driver and his two children, Michael John, 24, and Mary Rose, 15. Vengco’s youngest child, aged four, was spared.

Neighbors said they heard a series of gunshots but thought these were just ordinary firecrackers exploding.

Estrelita arrived home 30 minutes later after playing mahjong and found her husband and two children dead.
