Amok hacked to death after killing 2, injuring 6

MANILA, Philippines - A drunken barber, armed with a scissor, ran amuck in Antipolo City on Friday night, killing two neighbors and wounding six others before he was hacked to death by one of his victims’ kin, police said.

Senior Superintendent Rolando Anduyan, Rizal police director, said the head of suspect Jonathan Hementiza, 28, was cut off when a relative of one of his victims hacked him in the neck.

Police identified those fatally attacked by Hementiza as Romeo Gutlay Jr., 36, and Joseph Costa.

Hementiza, according to Anduyan, had been drinking heavily from Christmas Day to Friday.

The suspect dismantled his scissor and used a piece in repeatedly stabbing Gutlay and Costa in Sitio Sapo, Barangay Sta. Cruz in Antipolo City.

“He appeared to have snapped out by his heavy drinking. He was described by witnesses as like a ‘zombie’ while attacking his victims,” said Anduyan.

Hementiza’s other victims were Emmanuel de Panio, 28; Dolores Odiaman, 35; April Joy Macawile, 16; Jessie Bernardo, 54; Erika Ergina, 13; and Edwin Ergina, 46.

De Panio was confined at the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center while the five others were treated at the Antipolo District Hospital.

At the height of Hementiza’s rampage, a brother of one of his victims grabbed a bolo and hacked him.

Although wounded, Hementiza still rushed toward his victims, prompting the bolo wielder to hack him in the neck, dismembering his head.

Anduyan said Hementiza’s attacker is now detained.
