Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines   â€“ Nine fishermen were reported killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in the waters off Zamboanga Sibugay Tuesday, police said yesterday.

Authorities learned of the attack from the two alleged survivors who were brought to the Zamboanga City Medical Center for treatment, said Senior Inspector Noel Lozano, commander of the Police Station 3 in Barangay Sangali.

Lozano identified the survivors as Muksin and Loli Ambasal, who told investigators they played dead as the gunmen opened fire at them.

They said they were in their fishing boat near Olutanga Island when the gunmen arrived in another boat, rounded them up and shot them.

“After sensing the gunmen had left, they jumped into the water and swam using styrofoam as floaters,” said Police Officer 1 John Mark Delallana.

The survivors sought the help of the villagers in Talusan, who reported the incident to the police.
