MANILA, Philippines - To help ease the holiday traffic congestion along EDSA, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will open a "zipper lane" or a counterflow lane from SM Megamall to Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the “zipper lane†starts from the inner lane of northbound from SM Megamall up to Pioneer Street.
Tolentino said the zipper lane intends to ease traffic congestion from Ortigas going to Makati during the morning rush hours.
Vehicles may enter the zipper lane upon reaching the EDSA-SM Megamall area. Vehicles will then counterflow until reaching the end of the zipper lane at EDSA-Pioneer.
Tolentino said that by allowing the counter-flow of vehicles, the heavy flow of vehicles traffic along EDSA during rush hours will be lessened.
The "zipper lane" will be opened by the MMDA from 7:30 to 10:30 am, except weekends until December 23.
According to the MMDA, at least 1,200 vehicles ply the EDSA route per lane, per hour.
