Man takes family of 4 hostage
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna , Philippines – A man who reportedly took four members of a family hostage was shot dead by a police officer in Gumaca town, Quezon Sunday.
The man, whose identity was not yet available as of press time, was reportedly armed with two bolos when he barged into the house of Rene Nimo, 28, in Barangay Lagbing, according to Chief Superintendent Jesus Gatchalian, Calabarzon police director.
Aside from Nimo, the suspect took his wife Sunshine, 22, and their children Zrome, three, and Sheryl, one, hostage.
Gatchalian said the incident started at about 6 p.m. Saturday and ended at 1 a.m. the following day, after a police sniper neutralized the alleged hostage-taker.
The suspect was described as about 30 years old, 5’3†tall and brown-skinned.
Chief Inspector Romulo Albacea, chief of the Gumaca police, said the suspect locked the victims in a room as he reportedly threatened to kill them if they escaped.
Albacea said the police and military were trying to convince the suspect to release the hostages, when one of the victims shouted for help.
This reportedly prompted ground commander to order the sniper to shoot the hostage-taker. – With Michelle Zoleta
