Deaths from 'Yolanda' rise to 5,796
MANILA, Philippines - Ten more bodies were recovered in areas devastated by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the Visayas, bringing the total number of deaths confirmed to 5,796.
Based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's (NDRRMC) report issued on Saturday, a total of 4,959 of the fatalities were recorded in Leyte and nearly half of the bodies were recovered in Tacloban City and remained unidentified.
The NDRRMC also reported that 1,779 people were still missing and nearly four million people remained displaced.
The super typhoon slammed into Eastern Visayas and crossed several provinces last November 8, leaving a wide swath of destruction in the Visayas.
The NDRRMC said that at least 12.2 million people were affected by the super typhoon, the strongest to hit the country and one of the strongest recorded typhoon in the world.
The NDRRMC said that nearly a month after Yolanda's devastation, the Tacloban City airport's operations remained limited.
Billion of pesos of aid from local and international donors have been pouring into the Visayas for nearly a month.
The government is looking at least three years to rehabilitate areas that were devastated by the super typhoon.
