KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines – A newly elected barangay councilman here was killed while his companion was wounded in an ambush yesterday morning, police said.
Senior Superintendent Leo Ajero, city police chief, said Ronaldo Macrohon, who was elected councilman of Barangay Malinan in the Oct. 28 village polls, and a companion, Efren Penio, were on their way to the barangay center onboard a motorcycle when two men blocked their path and shot them with .45-caliber pistols.
Macrohon, a former member of the Citizen’s Armed Forces Geographical Unit, died on the spot, while Penio sustained several gunshot wounds.
The ambushers escaped toward nearby Barangay Sikitan aboard a motorcycle parked not far away from the spot where they attacked Macrohon and Penio.
Ajero said investigators have yet to determine if the ambush was related to the barangay elections or could have stemmed from an old grudge.
