Ex-vice mayor shot dead in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines - A gunman shot to death a former vice mayor of a town in Batangas province on Thursday morning.

Ex-vice mayor Alfredo Alcover was about to board his vehicle in Barangay Poblacion, San Pascual town, when the assailant approached and shot him from behind.

Alcover instantly died from gunshot wounds in the back and head.

Witnesses said the shooter fled right after the former vice mayor went down.

Alcover is acting as security consultant of incumbent San Pascual Mayor Antonio Dimayuga.

Police have yet to determine the motive for the killing and the identity of the shooter.
