MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard has gone in heightened alert status as it braces for the exodus of travelers from urban centers to the provinces for the barangay elections on Monday, October 28.
PCG spokesman Armand Balilo said all of their sea marshals were reminded to be extra vigilant while on board ferries to ensure the safety of passengers.
The PCG also deployed K9 units in seaports to prevent illegal cargo on board passenger ships, Balilo added.
He advised people to refrain from carrying firearms on ships without the appropriate Commission on Elections exemption as the nationwide gun ban is still in effect.
The gun ban took effect last September 28 and will last until November 12.
The public should report to authorities any unattended baggage or persons acting suspiciously, Balilo said.
He said the PCG is expected to extend its alert status until the celebration of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
