Two magnitude-5.1 aftershocks hit Tagbilaran City

MANILA, Philippines - Two magnitude-5.1 earthquakes rocked Bohol's capital city as aftershocks of the magnitude-7.2 temblor that struck Central Visayas continued on Wednesday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that first magnitude-5.1 aftershock was recorded at 9:36 a.m. It was traced 34 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Tagbilaran.

It was felt at Intensity 4 in the city and in Sibulan, Negros Oriental. It was also felt at Intensity 3 in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu and Intensity 2 in Mambajao, Camiguin.

The second magnitude-5.1 aftershock was recorded at 10:42 a.m. It struck at a depth of 12 kilometers and traced 57 kilometers northeast of the city.

The temblor was felt strongest at Intensity 5 in Lapu Lapu City, Intensity 3 in Sibulan and Intensity 2 in Iloilo City and Ormoc City.

As of noon today, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) has recorded a total of 107 deaths from the quake. It said a total of 276 people have been reported injured.

Majority of the casualties were in Bohol, where the epicenter of the magnitude-7.2 quake on Tuesday morning was traced.

All government agencies under the NDRRMC have been placed on alert and their resources directed to the rescue and relief operations in Central Visayas.

The NDRRMC has reported that 2.8 million people were affected by the quake, which has already spawned more than 800 aftershocks.
