5 cops killed in Zambo standoff honored

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police on Monday conferred posthumous meritorious promotion to five PNP personnel killed in action during the Zamboanga City standoff with Moro National Liberation Front fighters last September.
The ceremony, led by PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima, included the wreath-laying rites at the Bantayog ng Bayaning Pulis in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
Promoted posthumously to the next higher rank were Police Inspector Jay Oy-Oyan, PO3 Murphy Abbilani, PO2 Lawin Salisa, PO2 Enrique Afable III, and PO2 Christopher Hernaez.
The orphaned families of the slain police officers also got checks representing death benefits consisting of P250,000 from the President’s Social Fund, PNP Special financial assistance equivalent to six month pay and allowances ranging from P141,000 up to P181,000 each, burial benefits of not less than P50,000 each and gratuity of at least P203,000 each from the National Police Commission.
Each orphaned family will receive roughly between P1.5 and P2 million, on top of the estimated P15,000 monthly lifetime pension from the PNP and roughly the same amount of pension for five years from the Napolcom.
Orphaned children of the deceased are also entitled to PNP educational benefits. Surviving kin are also entitled to claim insurance benefits from the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund, Inc, the insurance provider of the PNP.
Seventeen other police personnel were wounded in more than 20 days of fighting in Zamboanga City.
The situation in the city has normalized since after some 206 rebels were killed and 262 others were captured by government security forces.
