MANILA, Philippines - The national government will help in building 22 temporary shelters or bunkhouses in Zamboanga City for the 220 families affected by the standoff between government security forces and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) fighters.
Secretary Dinky Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and Development said the bunkhouses will be constructed on a 1.4-hectare of land offered by the family of Barangay Captain Abdurahman Nuno who founded Barangay Taluksangay in the 17th century.
Soliman said that the shelter is part of the rehabilitation plan of Zamboanga.
The DSWD, together with the local government of Zamboanga, and private organization Habitat for Humanity agreed to form a partnership particularly in building temporary and permanent shelters for the families whose houses were burned down during the standoff.
"Better homes would be built so that the conflict-affected families will no longer be called 'evacuees' since their new houses will be resilient to storms and other natural calamities," Soliman said.
As part of the transition period from relief to rehabilitation, the evacuees are now cooking their own food being supplied by DSWD.
President Benigno Aquino III earlier earmarked to the DSWD around P3.89 billion to rehabilitate areas in Zamboanga City affected by the recent skirmishes.
