Traffic constables undergo English, grooming training

MANILA, Philippines - The Meropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday day said its traffic constables (enforcers) will undergo retraining on personality development, good grooming, and communication skills.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the retraining, which started Tuesday morning, will help traffic constables improve their skills in traffic management and their physical well-being.

“We want them to familiarize themselves with new traffic rules and regulations while at the same time train them to look good, feel good, and speak good,” Tolentino said.

The training-seminar is being conducted by the agency’s Traffic Education unit with assistance from private professionals who are experts in personality enhancement, English proficiency and speech development, and grooming and personal hygiene.

Assistant General Manager for Operations Emerson Carlos said all 1,800 traffic constables are covered by the program, with each batch of 30 to be taught in three days.

“Our main goal is make them expert in traffic laws. However, it is also important that they be taught to take care of themselves so that they will look good to the public. We hope that in the coming weeks, there will be no more lousy traffic constables,” Carlos pointed out.

“If they want respect from motorists, then they should undergo rigid training,” he added.

Carlos added that there will also be instructions on proper radio communications, flood control, towing protocols, and other technical subjects, physical fitness and basic self-defense.
