Probe set on Bataan inmates’ plight

Raffy Viray - The Philippine Star

BALANGA CITY , Philippines  â€“ The provincial board of Bataan is set to look into the plight of inmates at the provincial jail who have been locked up for years due to the lack of prosecutors and regional trial court judges to handle their cases.

Board member Reynaldo Ibe, who chairs the board’s committee on justice, human rights and legal matters, said they would look into the complaints of relatives of the inmates whose cases have dragged on for years.

Ibe cited the case of an inmate who had been jailed for 11 years but who turned out to be innocent of the charges filed against him.

“This is only an example of injustice done to an innocent detainee maybe because of financial constraints or lack of lawyers and prosecutors,” Ibe said.
