Partylist solon, peasant leaders nabbed in Tarlac

MANILA, Philippines -Police arrested on Tuesday a partylist congressman and several other peasant activists and leaders in Hacienda Luista in Tarlac  during a fact-finding mission on the alleged irregularities in the land distribution of the property owned by the family of President Benigno Aquino III.

According to reports reaching rights group Karapatan, police nabbed Anakpawis partylist Rep. Fernando Hicap and other peasant leaders  around 11:45 a.m. 
 
Hicap, also the chairman of  fisherfolk group Pamalakaya, was part of the national fact-finding mission team in Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac to find out the impact and correctness of the "lottery land reform" conducted by the Department of Agrarian inside the 6,453 hectare sugar estate. 
 
The mission was initiated by the  farm workers' groups - -Unyon ng Manggagawa sa Agrikultura and Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Asyenda Luisita.
 
Among those arrested were Danilo Ramos of Anakpawis Partylist, Florida Sibayan acting chairperson of AMBALA, Sister Patricia Fox, Ericson Acosta, Kerima Acosta, Rene Blazan, Kala San Juan, Ronald Matthew Gustillo, and Luz Versola. 
 
Hicap and the rest of the members of the fact finding had just came from a dialogue with the Philippine Army at Barangay Balete when members of Tarlac policemen arrested them. They are now being held at the Tarlac City Police Station under the command of deputy chief Jovy Pagarigan.
 
Charges filed against Hicap were malicious mischief, illegal entry and assault to men in uniform, which the Anakpawis partylist representative denied.
