Army safehouses torched in

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Six nipa huts serving as safehouses for Army soldiers guarding a telecommunications tower were burned by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Uson, Masbate on Sunday.

The 12 soldiers using the nipa huts arrived in the village of Paguihaman only to find out that their camp had been razed to the ground.

The camp was part of the detachment of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Battalion and 9th Infantry Division operating in the province.

Police expressed the belief that the refusal by the telecom firm to pay “revolutionary taxes” was the motive for the attack.

On Aug. 22, suspected rebels raided a construction site in Pio Duran town in Albay and set the construction equipment on fire.
