Group wants 'in-city' relocation for informal settlers

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A Church-based group, Caritas Manila, on Tuesday said informal settlers in Metro Manila areas should be relocated to 'in city' areas.

Caritas Manila executive director Father Anton Pascual said that instead of bringing them to the outskirts of the metropolis, the national government must relocate urban poor residents in city relocations to ensure they have source of income and education for their children.

The prelate, however, said he sees nothing wrong in clearing informal settlers living in danger areas, such as long riverbanks and creeks.

The national and local governments have adequate funds to build in-city relocation centers for those who would be affected by the clearing of the waterways in Metro Manila, Pascual said, noting that the P18,000 given to the families is not enough to make a living.

He noted that the government should have a support system for the relocated families to ensure that they would not return to these danger areas.
