MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) remitted P3.5 billion to the Bureau of Internal Revenue, representing individual taxes withheld by 148,000 police personnel in 2012.

The PNP reported on Friday that the total taxes withheld by the PNP in 2012 amounted to P3,533,437,605.58 among all PNP personnel or an average of P23,874.57 tax withheld per individual.

Withholding Tax on Compensation is the tax withheld from income payments to individuals receiving purely compensation income, the PNP added.

In the PNP hierarchy, individual tax withheld is automatically deducted from the monthly salary.

The taxes withheld become obligations of the PNP to BIR that is remitted to the account of the tax collection agency every year.

The BIR said that there were around 1.7 million self-employed professionals in the country who paid a total of P9.8 billion in taxes in 2010, or an average of only P5,764.
