MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education on Tuesday announced that it will get bicycles for high school students in Bohol as a means of transport to school.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro said the bikes will be given to students of Baclayon National High School in Bohol with the help of Bikes for the Philippines Foundation Inc.
Luistro, who signed a memorandum of agreement with BPFI president Joel Uichico, said the P600,000 worth of bikes donated by the foundation will also include training in proper bike handling and maintenance.
He said DepEd and PFI agreed to look into expanding the project to cover more areas.
"I have asked the field offices to evaluate their areas to see if their students can be beneficiaries as well," Luistro said.
"This will not only help them get to school but also provide a way to teach road safety and environmentalism," he added.
The bike project's initial recipients are grade 7 to 12 students, with options being studied to expand the age range of beneficiaries.
