MANILA, Philippines - Police found that the permit of 9-mm pistol belonging to outgoing Cagayan de Oro Rep. Benjamin "Benjo" Benaldo, which he supposedly used to shoot himself on the chest Thursday night has expired.
Quezon City Police Senior Superintendent Ruben Zapanta said Friday that the firearm's "permit to carry outside of residence" was only valid until March 22, 2012.
Police records say that the handgun was registered under Benaldo's name.
Zapanta said they have yet to decide whether the lawmaker will be charged for "illegal possession of firearms."

Benaldo was found drenched in blood by his staff in his office at the House of Representatives and was rushed to a nearby hospital following what police believe was a failed suicide attempt.
Earlier, Quezon City Police chief Senior Superintendent Richard Albano said there was no evidence of foul play based on the inspection conducted by crime scene investigators.
The recuperating Benaldo, meanwhile, is now in a stable condition.
