PALOMPON, Leyte, Philippines – Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez achieved another accomplishment after President Aquino signed into law a bill she filed converting the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) into a university last June 5.
The PIT’s conversion has been a long time dream of the local residents, as they noted that aside from maritime related courses, it could now expand its courses.
PIT is one of the country’s premier maritime institutions and has produced thousands of seafarers.
Under Republic Act 10599, the now Palompon Polytechnic State University (PPSU) can offer “non-traditional courses†deemed necessary by the Board of Regents.
The law takes effect 15 days after it’s publication in a newspaper of general circulation.
Mayor Ramon Onate expressed gladness over Lucy’s accomplishment. He said the conversion does not only bring prestige to the town as home to the fourth district’s only university, but it also boosted the morale of its graduates.
Onate lauded Lucy for not giving up on the bill.
A graduate of the University of the Philippines-Cebu, Lucy believes in the advantage of having a public university in her district.
