BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A woman reportedly suffering from postpartum depression cut off her husband’s penis after stabbing him and one of their twin sons dead in Barangay Bacuyangan, Hinobaan, Negros Occidental over the weekend.
Arlene Galan, 33, who was arrested after the incident, also stabbed her two other sons and hit another with an iron bar.
The fatalities were identified as Johnny Galan, 50, and one-year-old Jay Mar while the wounded were Jay Von John, 11; Jay Mar’s twin brother, Jay Mark; and Johnny Jr., four months old.
Case investigator Police Officer 3 Eddie Napolis told The STAR that Arlene first hit Johnny with an iron bar, rendering him unconscious.
She took a pair of scissors and stabbed her husband several times before cutting off his penis.
Arlene then stabbed the twins and Johnny Jr., who were sleeping beside each other.
She also hit her eldest son, Jay Von John, as he arrived home after buying milk.
Napolis said Jay Von John, who suffered head injuries, escaped and sought help from their neighbors.
Johnny and Jay Mar died while being treated at the Eleuterio Decena District Hospital in Hinobaan.
Johnny Jr. and Jay Mark, who suffered multiple stab wounds, and Jay Von John were reportedly in stable condition at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in this city.
Jay Von John told police that when he got home, he saw his father bloodied and his mother holding an iron bar.
Probers recovered the scissors and the iron bar from the crime scene.
According to investigators, Arlene started suffering from postpartum depression after giving birth to Johnny Jr. She was reported to have tried to commit suicide in the past.
Arlene is currently detained at the Hinobaan police station.
Napolis said Arlene’s relatives decided to bring her to a mental facility in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. – With Cecille Suerte Felipe
