Group calls for strict enforcement of worksite safety policy

MANILA, Philippines--A labor group on Wednesday called on the Department of Labor and Employment to strictly implement the health and safety standards in work sites nationwide.
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines made the call following the death of three construction workers who were buried in a landslide in Barangay Dayap Itaas in Laurel, Batangas while they were working on a rip-rap the other day. Four survivors suffered minor injuries.
Initial information gathered showed the victims and their co-workers had no personal protective equipment worn at the time of the incident.
"We Filipinos always have the tendency to relax our vigilance and application of health and safety rules in the workplace especially if these are located far from the central urban attention.
"This is one regionalistic mindset we should disposed of because workplace accidents and mishaps in work sites knows no time and location. We allow accidents to get worse because we did not do our duties," TUCP secretary general Gerard Seno said.
Reports said that there was also no safety equipment in place that would minimize the impact on workers when the landslide happened.
There is also a need to verify report if the employer of the victims is a fly-by-night contractor, the TUCP said.
"We are calling the attention of the DOLE regional 4A to respond and reach out to the families of the victims and make sure all obligations of the employer or contractor to the victims are met.
"We also urged them and all the other safety and health inspectors in the country to strengthen their vigilance even if projects and constructions are located in remote and far flung rural barangays or municipality,"Seno added.
