Clash between rival camps leads to cop chief’s sacking
BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – The police chief of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte has been removed from his post following last Tuesday’s encounter between supporters of contending mayoral candidates, which left two people dead.
Superintendent Jefrey Gorospe, Ilocos Norte police spokesman, said Chief Inspector Dominic Guerrero replaces Senior Inspector Roger Digmayo, whose relief came two days after the shooting incident.
The encounter in the Pagudpud town proper between supporters of re-electionist Mayor Matilde Sales and his brother-in-law, Vice Mayor Marlon Sales, who is also running for the town’s top post, resulted in the death of a certain Ryan Calventas and Roger Ragasa.
Calventas is Mayor Sales’ aide, while Ragasa is one of the vice mayor’s campaign leaders. A bystander, Remedios Asuncion, whose house is near the encounter site, was hit by stray bullets and remains in critical condition.
Marlon is a younger brother of Matildes’ husband, former mayor Reynolan Sales, who is running for vice mayor under his wife’s ticket.
Matilde herself survived an ambush in 2010 after she won the mayoral race against Marlon’s wife, Emilen. – Charlie Lagasca, Raymund Catindig
