Bodies of 5 dead in Mayon ash explosion found

MANILA, Philippines - Authorities have recovered the bodies of the five people who were killed after the Mayon Volcano's phreatic eruption on Tuesday.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda confirmed in a television interview that the bodies of three German nationals, a Spaniard from Germany and a local tour guide were found on Wednesday morning.
 
"Our people have achieved the goal of the quickest recovery of the casualties of this very unfortunate incident," Salceda said.
 
He added that a Thai national remains missing.
 
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the lone Filipino fatality as Jerome Berin.
 
The agency added that eight others, including four Thai nationals, were injured while two more people were unharmed.
 
Salceda said the recovery team is composed of 50 personnel.
 
On Tuesday morning, the famed volcano spewed a towering cloud of ash hundreds of meters above its summit.
 
 
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology referred to the phenomenon as a phreatic eruption or a steam-driven explosion.
 
Salceda has ordered the the suspension of all human activity within the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone of the volcano.
