Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Two members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with military troops in Catbalogan City, samar on Thursday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said.

Capt. Amado Gutierrez, 8th Infantry Division spokesperson, said around five NPA rebels were believed to be on their way to Catbalogan City when chanced upon by government soldiers.

The encounter lasted for about 15 minutes before the rebels withdrew and left two comrades killed in the clash, according to the military.

The soldiers recovered two assault rifles and an explosive from the rebels.

Gutierrez said NPA rebels were identified by the people of Barangay Albalate as those who extort money from political candidates in Catbalogan City.

Major General Gerardo Layug, 8th Infantry Division commander, said military presence in the area was "very timely" since it spoiled the plan of the NPAs in extorting money from local election candidates.

The 8th Infantry Division said it will continue to perform its mandate to ensure peaceful and safe elections.

On May 1, the military also foiled an extortion attempt by NPA rebels in Sorsogon, arresting two rebels and recovering high-powered firearms, explosives and campaign paraphernalia.

A senior military official earlier said election candidates are paying between P100,000 and P5 million to buy protection from the rebels. Related story: Reds raking it in from election extortion – Army
