LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Philippines – A drilling rig of the Far South East Gold Resources Inc., a subsidiary of the international mining African-based Goldfields Resources Corp., was burned by four armed men wearing military uniform in Mankayan, Benguet Thursday afternoon.
Cordillera police director Chief Superintendent Benjamin Magalong said the suspects armed with M-16 and M-203 rifles arrived at the mining site in Sitio Ampontoc, Barangay Colalo at past 6 p.m.
Responding policemen tried to pursue the suspects but failed to catch them.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspects as police stations in Benguet were alerted to pre-empt communist rebels from launching a major offensive.
Magalong hinted that the rebels might be behind the incident.
