Free LRT, MRT rides for veterans on April 5-11

Alexis Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Veterans will be given free rides at the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) from April 5 to 11 in observance of the Philippine Veterans Week.

The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) said the Transportation Department has issued a memorandum stating that veterans would enjoy free rides during the said dates from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“Veterans who wish to avail of the free ride must show their identification cards issued by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office upon entrance to MRT and LRT stations,” PVAO said in a statement.

The guards on duty will then list their names in a logbook and will give them a boarding pass. Veterans have to surrender their boarding pass upon arrival at their destination.

Veterans are allowed to bring one companion when availing of the free ride.

To avail of the privilege, the companion must be identified by the veteran to the guard on duty and should present a valid ID.

PVAO said the Light Rail Transit Authority and the MRT-3 administration have ordered all station personnel to assist the veterans and their companions.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya said the provision of free rides is their way of showing gratitude to the veterans for their loyal services to the nation.

The agency will also provide vehicles to veterans and their companions who would troop to Mt. Samat in Pilar, Bataan for the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan.
