MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police placed all its units in heightened alert on Monday to ensure the safety of the public throughout the Holy Week.

PNP Spokesperson Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo, Jr. said PNP Director General Alan Purisima directed police units nationwide to increase security of the public during the Holy Week, including all election-related activities and town fiesta celebrations.

"Such events are expected to generate numerous commuters and tourists who will travel to their respective provinces and tourist destinations and these may cause peace and order concerns including traffic congestion, accidents and other crimes. Criminal elements may take advantage of people converging in places such as beach and other tourist destinations for relaxation and recreation," Cerbo said.

The security measures, to be implemented in bus terminals, airports, seaports, train stations, recreational areas, highways, main thoroughfares and crime-prone areas will take effect from the Holy Week until the end of May.

Purisima also instructed the PNP to coordinate with local government units, non-government organizations and volunteer groups in establishing assistance desks.

Metro Manila police chief Director Leonardo Espina said motorist assistance efforts of the National Capital Region Police Office this Holy Week starts on Monday, March 25.

Motorists can seek help by texting 2920 or patrol 117 for needed assistance, he said.

Vacationers are also reminded to observe the BLOW policy- check brakes, lights, oil, water, battery, air and gas as well the vehicle's engine and most of all the tires to avoid accidents.
