La Union candidate for city councilor gunned down

Raymund Catindig - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A candidate for councilor in the capital city of La Union did not survive the second attempt on his life by an unidentified gunman who shot him before his family in  Barangay Bangcusay Sunday night.

Danilo Nisperos was playing card games with his relatives when the gunman entered their house and shot him several times, Superintendent Manuel Apostol, San Fernando City Police station chief, said.

The suspect fled after the shooting.

Nisperos’ wife died in an ambush by unidentified men on a motorcycle in 2010.

Police are investigating if politics was the motive for the killing.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government has declared La Union among the “areas of special concern” in the May elections.

Several candidates have been killed since the Commission on Elections enforced the election gun ban in January.
