MANILA, Philippines - Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim suspended classes in public schools on Friday due to the bad weather.
Lim clarified that only public schools -- from elementary to college -- being run by the city government are covered by the suspension of classes.
"No classes to Public Pre- School, Elementary, and High School," Lim announced in his Twitter account @TheMayorLim.
He added that afternoon classes at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, City College of Manila and Universidad de Manila are also suspended.
Lim said that administrations of private schools in the city may also suspend classes because of the bad weather.
"Sa lahat ng pribado at hindi government schools ay nasa discretion ng inyong administration ang pagkansela ng klase," he said.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration earlier said that the bad weather being experienced in Metro Manila is caused by the northeast monsoon (hanging amihan).
The weather bureau also said that several provinces in Luzon will experience moderate to heavy rainfall because of the northeast monsoon.
It said heavy rains may cause flash floods in low-lying areas.
