PCG to wait for bigger ship to remove USS Guardian

Dennis Carcamo -

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard on Monday said it will wait for a bigger salvage vessel to proceed with operation to remove the US Navy minesweeper, USS Guardian from the Tubbataha Reef in Sulu Sea.

PCG Commandant Rear Vice Admiral Rodolfo Isorena said the Jackson 25 salvage ship is expected to arrive in the area on Friday to help in the operations.

Isorena said the single salvor at the area, Smit Borneo, had failed to securely anchor at the site to start the salvage operations.

At for the last two days sinubukan po nila ibagsak muli iyong anchor kung kakapit so far po hindi kumapit iyong isang angkorahe," he added.

The PCG head also  said the success salvage operation depends on the weather condition.

He said the PCG is constantly monitoring and inspecting the position of the USS Guardian since it has ran aground in the reef last Jan. 17.
