BJMP to probe death of Ortega slay witness
MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said yesterday it would continue its investigation into the death of a suspect-turned witness in the murder of environmentalist and journalist Gerry Ortega in Puerto Princesa, Palawan in 2011.
Dennis Aranas allegedly committed suicide inside his cell at the Quezon District Jail in Lucena City. The BJMP said an autopsy conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation pointed to asphyxia by hanging as the cause of his death.
It was earlier reported that Aranas was depressed over his removal from the Witness Protection Program and hinted of killing himself.
In a report to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas, Chief Superintendent Diony Mamaril, BJMP officer-in-charge, said the autopsy affirmed initial reports that Aranas died by hanging.
Roxas had ordered a thorough investigation into the death of Aranas, who was considered a vital witness in the killing of Ortega. The family of Ortega raised suspicions that Aranas could have been murdered.
Roxas assured the family of Aranas that heads will roll in case of foul play or a cover up.
Mamaril said the warden of the Quezon District Jail and the BJMP regional director were directed to explain the delay in the submission of reports and other concerns in the handling of the case.
The BJMP said Aranas’ remains have been turned over to his brother, Aljohn, at around 10 p.m. last Tuesday.
Inmates found Aranas hanging with a shoulder bag strap around his neck Tuesday morning.
