Death toll from Mindanao floods rises to 9

MANILA, Philippines - Nine people have been confirmed killed due to floods caused by the tail end of a cold front, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Thursday.

The NDRRMC said new fatalities were recorded in Davao del Norte. They were identified as Teresa Jamero, 90 of Asuncion town and Jose del Campo, 79, of Tagum City.

The six other fatalities also died of drowning were identified as one-year-old infant Lord Gallarde of Compostela Valley, Boyet Borres, 19 and Clyde Selgas, 19 both from Misamis Oriental, Herbert Solidum and Danny Nunes both from Oriental Mindoro and John Michael Unson, 21, of Misamis Oriental.

Meanwhile, a certain Glenn Custodio, 36, of Tagum City died of electrocution. The floods also left six others injured and three others missing.

The NDRRMC also reported that the amount of property damaged by the floods has reached P78.97 million.

Caraga town in Davao Oriental was worst hit with P50 million worth of damaged property, followed by Asuncion in Davao del Norte with P20.4 million.

The province of Agusan del Sur, meanwhile, sustained P7.53 million in damage. Other areas affected by the bad weather were Surallah in South Cotabato, Kapalong and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte and Davao City.

A total of 15 barangays in Davao City have placed under state of calamity namely Tigatto, Maa, 19-B, 74-A, 5-A, Mandug, Waan, 8-A, 9, 10, 1-A, 2-A, 76-A, Lasang and Calinan.

The NDRRMC said 97,908 families or 466,850 persons have been affected in 282 barangays in Davao, SOCCSKSARGEN and Caraga regions. Of this, 27,778 families or 106,794 are still inside 133 evacuation centers.
