154 arrested over poll gun ban

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police on Thursday reported that 154 people have been arrested over the first 10 days of the implementation of the Commission on Elections gun ban in connection with the May mid-term polls.

The National Election Monitoring and Action Center (NEMAC) of the PNP National Operations Center (NOC) recorded the arrest of the  gun ban violators from Jan. 13 to Jan. 23.

Among those apprehended were two policemen, 143 civilians, four government officials, and five security guards.

Police confiscated from the gun ban violators 139 different types of firearms, and an assortment of 238 other prohibited items consisting of two airsoft/gun replica, 41 bladed weapons, 10 grenades/explosive devices, and 186 rounds of ammunition for different gun caliber.

The 150-day gunban took effect on January 13,  marking the official start of the election period for the 2013 midterm polls. The nationwide firearms prohibition is in effect until June 13.
