KORONADAL CITY, Philippines  â€“ Several civic and youth groups in Region 12 have signified their support for mining as they anticipate the sector’s potential contribution to the local economy.

An inter-evangelical Christian community group from this city, a General Santos City-based transport group, an organization of professional engineers with members from South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, and youth organizations from Region 12 have signed consolidated petitions addressed to the national government in support of the proposed Tampakan project and what they call as “a new and responsible mining industry” in the region.

“The Tampakan mining project represents modern, ethical and responsible mining which is what we need in the province,” said Samuel Timogtimog , a pastor representing the Koronadal City-based inter-evangelical Christian group.

For her part, Pia Lozano, who heads a regional association of professional engineers, said, “With the right technology we can properly harness the mineral resources of the province with the Tampakan copper-gold mining project.”
