Central Luzon newsmen seek NBI help on broadcaster’s killing

Manny Galvez - The Philippine Star

CABANATUAN CITY , Philippines  â€“ The Central Luzon Media Association (CLMA) has sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in solving the killing of a broadcaster two months ago.

Ronald Madrid Leander, CLMA president, said they decided to request the assistance of lawyer Norman Taloza, NBI chief for Nueva Ecija and Aurora, to help solve the Nov. 8 killing of Julius Caezar Cauzo because of the snail-paced investigation of the police.

“It’s been almost two months and yet we have not seen any progress in the investigation of the (police). They say they have suspects but they have not been identified and all they could show are (artist’s) sketches. We hardly know if these people are real persons or not,” he said.

“If we don’t take a direct hand in the investigation, authorities might just sit on the case and we may not be able to obtain justice for Cauzo,” he added.

Cauzo, 51, an anchorman of radio station dwJJ, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men while on his way to work in Cabanatuan City.

Leander expressed disappointment that while Malacañang announced that the police knew the identities of Cauzo’s killers, the police though have failed to name them.

Leander said Cauzo is the 14th media practitioner slain under the Aquino administration.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said Cauzo is the fifth newsman killed in 2012 and the 154th since 1986.
