No need to suspend polls in typhoon-hit areas – Padaca

Raymund Catindig - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – Commission on Elections  (Comelec) Commissioner Grace Padaca has rejected the proposal of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to defer elections in areas devastated by typhoons Pedro and Quinta.

In an interview aired by a radio station here, Padaca said the Comelec  “is in the right track” after the successful re-registration of voters.

Padaca said she does not foresee any obstruction in the holding of elections in parts of Visayas and Mindanao that were devastated by two successive typhoons this month.

The NDRRMC said elections should be postponed in typhoon-devastated areas, where government facilities were destroyed.
