No tsunami alert over Vanuatu quake

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) did not raise a tsunami alert despite a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the South Pacific island of Vanuatu yesterday morning.

“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data. However, the earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast located within a hundred kilometer of the epicenter, ” Phivolcs said.
