JI member dies after capture in Marawi
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A suspected member of regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) was wounded when he resisted arrest during a police-military operation in Marawi City Thursday night, but died later while undergoing treatment in a hospital, authorities said.
The suspect, a certain Ustadz Sanusi, alias Ishak, was captured during a raid by joint forces of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade under Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero and police Special Action Force (SAF) on his safehouse in Barangay Salam in the Mindanao State University compound.
Sanusi, the military said, had an arrest warrant for arson and murder issued by the Sarangani court.
Sanusi, among the seven JI members targeted by the military, yielded a grenade and an M-16 rifle.
An SAF member, whose name was withheld for security reason, was injured when he accidentally fell from a building during the operation.
