Fish kill stink irks Bacolod folk

Danny B. Dangcalan - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines  – Foul odor from a fish kill in a creek here forced at least two schools to suspend classes on Monday.

Officials of Jose Montelibano Elementary School and St. Joseph High School-La Salle in Barangay Villamonte decided to suspend classes as the foul odor coming from Cabacawan Creek had made some students dizzy.

Last Friday, residents of Barangays Estefania, Villamonte and Montevista complained about the foul odor, prompting the Estefania barangay council to pass a resolution on Monday requesting the city government to speed up the investigation into the fish kill.

Estefania barangay head Elsie Valenzuela said they collected 15 sacks of dead janitor fish from the Cabacawan Creek Saturday morning.

A poultry farm in the area is being suspected of dumping harmful chemicals into the creek, causing the fish kill.
