MANILA, Philippines - Government troops have overrun a regional camp of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Capiz last Friday, a military official said over the weekend.
Maj. Gen. Jose Mabanta Jr., commander of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, said the capture of the NPA regional camp in the mountainous area of Tapaz town in Capiz came after days of sustained Army operations against the Panay-based insurgents.
Before the capture of the main rebel camp, patrolling Army troops found an NPA satellite camp within the general area of Barangays Nayawan and Lahug, both in Tapaz town, also last Friday.
Maj. Enrico Gil Ileto, spokesman of the 3rd Infantry Division, said the captured rebel camps belonged to the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon Panay.
The discovery of the NPA lairs, according to Ileto, came on the heels of heavy fighting between patrolling Army troops and the insurgents in the area early last week.
